Erin Cox supports the RAMM museum in their acquisition of a piece of Devon history!
In an exciting chapter for Erin Cox, a historic milestone has been reached in collaboration with the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter. Erin has taken an important role in supporting the museum’s acquisition of a remarkable historical find – a late Anglo-Saxon gold ring discovered in Wembworthy, Devon.
The Wembworthy ring was unearthed by a metal detectorist in 2018. It represents a rare glimpse into Devon's Anglo-Saxon past. Erin Cox, born and raised in Exeter, understands the significance of such cultural treasures and wanted to help keep the ring on Devon soil. The gold ring, adorned with intricate cat-like creatures, is believed to have been crafted for a small woman or child. It has also been noted that the ring is in remarkable condition given its age.
The Wembworthy ring is destined for a place of honor in RAMM's Making History gallery, offering visitors a tangible connection to the diverse tapestry of Anglo-Saxon Devon. Collaborating with the University of Exeter’s Digital Humanities Lab, RAMM plans to employ advanced technology, including 3D scans and imaging to enable the public to appreciate the ring's exquisite details up close. Erin also hopes to hand carve a homage to the ring in her Topsham studio to further add to the history of this find. Watch this space!
Erin Cox’s contribution towards its acquisition is rooted in a belief that such treasures should remain close to their place of discovery. She expressed, “The story that it tells is a wonderfully human story that, as a maker, connects with me. I think it’s really important to save objects like this and keep them local to where they were found.”
The collaborative efforts of various other entities, including the ACE/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, Headley Trust, Friends of RAMM, C James Cadbury CT, Julian Steer-Fowler, and a private donor, underscore the whole community's dedication to preserving and celebrating this piece of Devon’s history.
Erin Cox's involvement in this acquisition signifies a personal commitment to preserving and celebrating the cultural heritage of her hometown. As this captivating piece finds its home in RAMM, it becomes a bridge connecting the past with the present. Join Erin in celebrating this extraordinary journey of the Wembworthy ring!
